artist statement

I remember in 1971 when Picasso was 90 years old, he was invited for a
solo exhibition by a famous gallery in Paris. Picasso said "in my
life, I created with all my might, but I finally realized that it is
not about wealth and honor. Rather it is about returning to the
primitiveness and child's mind."

I think his words have important significance. I have been drawing a
unique style of painting since I graduated from the graduate school of
Hongik University.

My artwork's subject is primitiveness and a child's mind. It is a
product of scratched sketches made in a spontaneous and uncontrolled
manner. It deals with breakaway shapes, breakaway images and
non artificiality. But in my artworks you find meditation, symbols,
vitality and yin and yang. My artwork's philosophy is natural
inaction through Lao Tzu's Taoism.

Art Critic, Kwang Myung Kim said: "Artist HongTae Kim sees
primitiveness from a child's mind. In addition his consistent
professional mindset as an artist towards topics formed by the
symbolism of a child's mind is connected to our times and contains
values pursued by us and for human beings".
